A commercial for the United Negro College Fund which aired frequently in the 1980s used
the slogan 'the mind is a terrible thing to waste'. We're not talking about college
educations here today, but this is a slogan which is absolutely true. Your mind has lot
more power than you might think; and the power of the mind is indeed a terrible thing to
waste. When you can access the power your mind contains, you can use it to change the
world around you for the better.
You've certainly heard about the law of attraction; the idea behind the book and film 'The
Secret'. Whatever you put your mental energy toward will come to you is the message of the
work. Whether you do so consciously or not, the power of the mind is such that you can
make whatever you focus on happen, whether for good or ill.
As an example, take the placebo effect - people who are receiving a placebo in clinical
trials of medications often experience the effects caused by the actual medication since
they believe that they are receiving the medication.
We do this kind of thing to ourselves all the time. For instance, when you wake up
thinking that this is going to be 'one of those days'; and it turns out to be a bad day.
It's actually the power of the mind that causes this to happen.
There is an ever growing amount of evidence for a scientific basis to the power of the
mind, with one of the most intriguing ideas coming from the world of quantum physics. This
is the possibility that matter either does not take shape until an observer is there to
witness it. This suggests that the power of the mind may actually be what shapes the
universe, not the other way around.
Many scientists now believe that many things which we think of as supernatural are in fact
explainable through hard science, although we're only beginning to understand just how it
is that telepathy, ESP and other mental phenomena work.
The power of the mind is something that you can train yourself to use for your own
benefit. If you could use your own mental energy to bend the universe and make positive
changes, wouldn't you want to learn how? There are a couple of methods which can help you
to learn to access your own latent mental powers.
The first step is to have a goal; this has to be a specific, rather than a general goal.
Instead of thinking 'I want to be rich', think 'I want three million dollars'. Having a
specific goal makes it easier for you to focus your mental energies on achieving your
objective. Learning to focus is the key here; most of the time, you may have dozens of
different thoughts going on at once.
There are people who already know how powerful the mind is and put their mental energy
into the achievement of their goals. They focus on specific objectives and put all of
their efforts towards their objective, using the full power of the mind. This is what
makes it happen; it's more difficult than it sounds on paper, but it's something that all
of us can achieve if we put our minds to it.
Suppose that there's a house that is just perfect for you - but it's not even for sale and
you're not ready to buy a home at the moment. However, the power of the mind can make it
all happen. Start focusing your mental energies on this goal. Visualize what vegetables
you'd plant in the garden and what color you'd paint each room in the home. Put your
energy into things which will help you be ready to make this home yours, such as looking
into how to get a good mortgage, getting a better job or a promotion so that you'll be
better off financially and other preparatory steps.
When you make this goal the target of the power of the mind, you begin to set the events
in motion which lead to it coming to pass. The home will go on the market, your offer will
be accepted and you'll easily secure a great mortgage. It's not luck that made this
happen; it's not just your hard work either - the power of the mind played the starring
role.
This is something that any of us has the ability to do. When you learn to tap into the
power of the mind, you can use it to achieve nearly anything in life. The important thing
is to start small and then work your way up to ever bigger and better things until you've
accomplished everything you want to in life.
